There is nothing more Christmassy than a candlelit carol service, from the splendour of a cathedral or concert hall to the intimacy of a parish church, London has them all. The list below is just a selection of what is on offer.

St Paul’s Cathedral, Christopher Wren’s magnificent domed cathedral, has a number of Christmas services from:

  • Cancer Research UK Carol Concert (11 Dec) with music by the Cathedral Choir and soloists including Joan Rodgers and Sir John Tomlinson, the Band of the Scots Guards and readings by celebrity guests (tickets £25),
  • A Celebration of Christmas (13 Dec) with the choir and the City of London Sinfonia performing,
  • Benjamin Britten’s A Ceremony of Carols (21 Dec),
  • Family Carols (22 Dec) especially for children.

Westminster Abbey, London’s Gothic church dating back to 11th century has been the setting for coronations and royal weddings. Christmas services run until 30 Dec, including Christmas Concert (11 Dec, £18-30), That Yonge Child including Britten’s Ceremony of Carols (16 Dec), Christmas story for families (24 Dec).

St Margaret’s Church (next to Westminster Abbey) has a candlelit service in aid of the homeless charity The Passage with readings by David Dimbleby, Peter Bowles and Richard Ingrams (14 Dec)

Southwark Cathedral on the south bank of the river close to London Bridge hosts the Mayor’s Carol Service (17 Dec)

Royal Albert Hall has carols by candlelight with the Mozart Festival Orchestra and readings by the actor Julian Rhind-Tutt (16 Dec) as well as a number of other Christmas themed concerts.

Fulham Palace, the medieval home of the Bishops of London until 1975, has a carol service in their Victorian chapel with refreshments served in the Drawing Room Café (14 Dec)

St Martin in the Fields on Trafalgar Square, has a family crib service and Midnight Mass (24 Dec).
