Event: Finders Keepers: Michael Hoppen’s photography collection
Location: Michael Hoppen Gallery, SW3
To mark the 20th anniversary of Chelsea’s Michael Hoppen Gallery, its owner decided to show photographs from his personal collection, ranging from anonymous 19th century curiosities to pictures by some great photographers, such as Irving Penn and Lee Miller.
Finders Keepers: A Survey of Collecting has some 130 images from Hoppen’s very varied collection of photographs that he has bought, kept for himself or in a few cases found. They are arranged in the order he acquired them, making it a very personal history that is on display.
Beside some well known images there are those far more anonymous that have caught Mr Hoppen’s eye, from the press photograph of a house hit by tornado with a woman dressed in white emerging from the devastation, a 1930 image of the German dancer Ida Fuchs with her hand covering her face by Baron Wolff von Gudenburg, and the much harder picture from 2009 of a woman on her side lying on a table with her face completely obscured by her red hair by the Swede Denise Grunstein.
