Chimerica is a play by Lucy Kirkwood about the complex relationship between two superpowers.
The plot imagines the fate of the lone man who stood up to the tanks in Tiananmen Square in 1989 and a (fictional) American photographer who took the defining images of the day.
The play is set in 2012 in New York, where the photographer is given a clue about the whereabouts of the unknown protestor. Amidst the backdrop of a presidential election in which American jobs losses caused by companies outsourcing production to China is a big issue, the photographer tries to track down the man he photographed all those years ago.
Lyndsey Turner directs this Headlong production, starring Stephen Campbell Moore and Benedict Wong. It transfers to the West End from August.
The play Chimerica is running at the Almeida Theatre in Islington, N1 until 6 Jul 2013 and then transferring to the Harold Pinter Theatre in the West End from 6 Aug to 19 Oct 2013.
