Carmen La Cubana
The world-conquering tale of love and jealousy takes on a fiery Cuban flavour in this bold reimagining of Bizet’s iconic opera.
Set against the simmering tensions of the Cuban revolution of 1958, Carmen La Cubana mixes the opera’s best loved numbers with salsa, mambo, rumba and cha-cha. Audiences can look forward to thrilling drama and a rousing score, with West End and Broadway director Christopher Renshaw at the helm and new orchestrations by Tony Award-winner Alex Lacamoire, who is the music director behind Hamilton.
This UK premiere of the new musical will be played out in one of the world’s leading venues dedicated to dance – Sadler’s Wells. The theatre was first established in 1683 and six buildings have stood on this site in Islington across the centuries. 2018 marks the 20th anniversary of Sadler’s Wells’ current London theatre and Carmen la Cubana is one of 20 landmark commissions designed to celebrate the huge range of genres, collaborations and talent in today’s dance world.
