Lumiere London 2018
There’s no better way to banish the January blues – so get ready to take to the streets and marvel at a dazzling array of incredible artwork and installations.
Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London
Bright lights, big city
The Christmas lights may have been packed away, but London will still be dazzling with illuminations for four evenings in January when the festival of light comes to town.
Lumiere London is a major festival of light art, with over 40 illuminations and artworks projected onto buildings around the West End, Covent Garden, Victoria, King’s Cross and the South Bank. Roads are closed to traffic during the evenings of the festival, making it a lovely time to explore the city on foot.
Artworks in this year’s line-up include the French artist Patrice Warrener’s The Light of the Spirit illumination of Westminster Abbey, an expanded version of his 2016 polychromatic work, giving the impression of a painted façade; Simon Corder’s fluorescent tube design lighting up the brickwork façade of a building in Mayfair’s South Audley Street; and German artist Ulf Langheinrich’s illumination of the National Theatre (best viewed from the Golden Jubilee pedestrian bridge over the Thames).
More than a million people came to see the lights in 2016, a massive coup for the organisers and artists involved for the first time the event was held. They had a year off last year but are now back with an expanded programme, both a testimony to their success and an attempt to spread the love — and the visitor numbers — across the city.
Festival destinations will include London’s West End (including Mayfair, Oxford Circus, Regent Street, Carnaby Street, Piccadilly, Piccadilly Circus, St James’s and St James’s Market, Leicester Square, Seven Dials) and King’s Cross, with Covent Garden, Fitzrovia, Victoria, South Bank and Waterloo added as new destinations for 2018.
Wrap up warm and wear comfortable shoes, as there’s a bit of walking involved if you want to see a number of installations. Talk to the concierge before you set off about recommended routes and the best stop-offs for a warming tipple to keep your spirits up — the Connaught Bar and Claridge’s Bar are both within walking distance of the West End’s Lumiere installations.
18 - 21 January 2018
