The best Christmas ice rinks in the capital
The very definition of festive fun
One of the joys of winter in London is ice skating under the stars against some of the capital’s most stunning backdrops. Christmas lights add to the atmosphere, making it great for a romantic evening or a fun family event. Outdoor ice rinks have been popping up all over the capital in the past few years. Here is our guide to the best.
13 November 2019 – 12 January 2020
The ice rink in Somerset House’s grand 18th-century courtyard is one of our favourite winter rinks. Skate from morning till night, or opt for Skate Lates, a special series of music nights throughout the festive season. There’s plenty of après-skate entertainment too, with Fortnum & Mason returning once again to take over the West Wing with their Christmas market of festive decorations and warming treats.

Hyde Park Winter Wonderland
21 November 2019 – 5 January 2020
With fairground rides, a traditional Christmas market, Alpine bars and a circus or two, this Hyde Park spectacular is so much more than just a place to skate – but with the UK’s largest outdoor ice rink set around the Victorian bandstand with live music, you wouldn’t want to miss it.

Natural History Museum
19 October 2019 - 12 January 2020
With a backdrop of Alfred Waterhouse’s 19th-century building, light wrapped trees and a giant Christmas tree, this ice rink is truly magical. Off ice, there is a bar for après-skate drinks overlooking the action and, of course, inside are the famous dinosaurs.

Tower of London
16 November 2019 – 5 January 2020
This is the ice rink with possibly the most dramatic setting: the former moat beside the 1000-year-old walls of The Tower of London, right by the River Thames. As night falls, the drama heightens as a series of lights illuminate the castle walls.

Hampton Court Palace
22 November 2019 – 5 January 2020
On the outskirts of London lies one of the greatest palaces, Henry VIII’s Hampton Court Palace. Skate back in time with the 1040sqm rink located right in front of the iconic Tudor façade. With 500 years of history to discover inside the palace, we would recommend arriving early and exploring everything it has to offer before hitting the ice.
